Sarah, well firstly well done on taking your first steps to reaching your goals! with regards to your running training I take it you are using the gyms treadmill?! well I can offer 2 pieces of advice

1. treadmill running is a very high impact activity especially on your knees, ankles and shins - so to combat this try using the cross trainer as this gives the same aerobic workout but with little or no impact

2. if you are insistant on using the treadmill, then why not ask your gym instructor to check your running technique or you can use gel insoles which are specially made at reduce impact - try www.physioroom.com

I hope this helps!

Why should I be physically active?

There are so many great reasons to be physically active that you’d probably be asleep by the time I'd listed them all, but how are these for starters?

  • better health

  • more energy

  • reduced stress

  • stronger bones and muscles

  • better balance, strength, suppleness and mobility

  • more independence in later life

  • improved sleep

  • better maintenance of a healthy weight

  • more social opportunities

  • a sense of achievement

  • increased enjoyment

'The good news is that many of these will come within weeks of you starting your new, active life.' says Adam
